Amaroo Heritage

Built in the late 1800s, Amaroo has been shaped by generations of people who valued craftsmanship, comfort, and care. What you experience today is the result of thoughtful preservation — a home that has evolved over time while holding firmly to its character.

Amaroo is an old house, but more than that, it is a well‑loved one.

A "Beautiful Place"

Amaroo is an Indigenous Australian word meaning “beautiful place.”
It is a name that feels deeply fitting.
Chosen by former owners in the 1970s, the name reflects both the setting and the spirit of the house — a place that has always been cherished, adapted thoughtfully, and shared with others to enjoy.

Before: The Original House

Amaroo began life as a modest late‑nineteenth‑century home.
Before later extensions and garden development, the house stood smaller and simpler — functional, solid, and unmistakably of its time.
Over the decades, each family who lived here left their mark, not by erasing the past, but by building carefully upon it.

Significant extensions and renovations were undertaken during the 1970s, with further updates through the 1990s–2024, allowing Amaroo to grow into a home suitable for modern family life.
Throughout these changes, original features were retained wherever possible — proportions respected, materials honoured, and details preserved.

One small example captures this approach perfectly: “Whiskey’s Step.”
Named after Kevin “Whiskey” Walker, who led the 1970s extension, the well-worn original back step marks the transition between original and newer spaces — a visual reminder that Amaroo has always valued balance between past and present.

Careful Change, Thoughtful Continuity

Mementos that carry the story

Some of the most meaningful traces of Amaroo’s past are found in the smallest details.
An original door key.
A weathered timber sign.
Handmade elements that show the marks of use rather than perfection.
These objects are not decorative additions — they are witnesses to the house’s long life and everyday rhythm.

Antiques, Artwork, and a Lived in Home

Throughout Amaroo you’ll find authentic antiques and period furnishings, many sourced locally or passed down through families.
They sit comfortably alongside contemporary touches, creating rooms that feel layered rather than staged — spaces intended for living, not display. Selected Tasmanian artwork further anchors the home in place, connecting the interiors to the creative life of the region.

The garden at Amaroo is as much a part of its heritage as the house itself.
Developed and reworked over decades, it reflects the same philosophy seen indoors — established plantings, old‑fashioned roses, seasonal change, and space to simply be still.
In spring and summer, the scent of jasmine and roses drifts through open doors. In quieter months, the garden remains a place of light, structure, and calm.

A Living Story

We hope guests feel not only comfortable here, but connected — to the house, its history, and the care that has shaped it across generations.
Amaroo is not a house preserved in time, but a story that continues to be lived.
Shaped by those who came before and cared for by those who follow, it remains a place of quiet continuity — familiar, welcoming, and deeply human. Each stay becomes part of that story, adding a gentle new chapter to a home that has always been meant to be lived in.
